Hello, I know most of us don't use livejournal any more (we're all on Facebook now) but there are things afoot and I thought I'd post here.
First, I'd like to answer, once and for all, the question of "whether or not Sketchgroup still meets." Here is this handy diagram:
You can also go here:http://austinsketchgroup.org/
Which is not very complicated any more. Basically it's a links page. If you're part of ASG and you want your links on this page, let us know.
We're doing a newsletter. One side of the paper is collected art from ASG attendees and the other is a single large image from one person. If you'd like free copy of the newsletter please respond here or to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will snailmail them to you.
We have an art show up right now at the Hideout. It's a very, very good show; one of our strongest yet. There'll be a closing party on November 1st, which is Sunday, so we'll have ASG and then a party. And lots of food and drink.
So, basically, people will be hanging out and drawing and eating and drinking a bit from 2pm until closing that day. That's all we have planned so far, maybe someone has more ideas.
It would be good to figure out who's interested and how many tables we're getting. It's already past the early registration deadline.

Dr. Sketchy Figure Drawing Class returns on Sunday, February 22nd from 5-8pm at the United States Art Authority Building (next to Spiderhouse Cafe). I'm super excited about our new location as now we will have access to food, coffee AND alcohol from Spiderhouse.

Dr. Sketchy this Saturday with Cella Blue of the White Ghosts Shivers!
Dr. Sketchy is not your daddy's figure drawing class. Dr. Sketchy is what happens when cabaret meets art school.
We mix sketching and Scotch, art with Amaretto and models with Manhattans. In addition to our relaxed artistic environment, we offer games and prizes and a killer live dj to keep the tunes on as the clothes come off.
Join us from 5-8pm at Elysium Saturday night for drinking, drawing and debauchery as we bring you Ms. Cella Blue from White Ghost Shivers as our October model. Chairs are $10 and tables for one are $15. This is a 21 and up event. Please RSVP as we will sell out of spots. Email MissD@austinsketchy.com with your name and seating preferences.

New York Comic Con
Who's in? I'm going. Might even have a table. If I do
have a table -- can I bring a bunch of everybody's merch and call it the Austin Sketchgroup table? We have this dope banner, after all:
By the way:
We have the new web site "up." Whatever. It's there. Go look, if you want to:

Just got our table assignment for Staple:
and in some very good company indeed. Check here:http://www.staple-austin.org/community/2008/02/table-assignments.html
We have three tables; one for nifty professional-looking stuff, one for crazy indy stuff, and one big table where people can draw.
So to all members of ASG: Bring stuff to sell! This is a great chance to sell prints and original artwork. As you can see we will have three full tables worth of wall space to fill. Don't forget to bring stuff to fix it to the wall with -- and I don't know what the walls are made of, either. So bring thumbtacks and
tape and easels and what have you. We'll have space.
also good to bring:
drawing materials for the drawing table.
snacks (like cookies and crackers)
and as many people as you can. This will be kid-friendly. Tell your kids to bring stuff to sell too.

rough version of ASG page
OK, here's a very rough version of the ASG page for the Staple brochure.
PLEASE HELP ME I NEED HELP OH MY GOD HELP ME
*ahem* what I meant to say is, comments and assistance would be greatly appreciated.
OK, here's what's left to do:
The lettering is all placeholder fonts and needs to be redone.
Every panel could use LOTS of cleanup and correction except for panels five, six, and eight, which have not yet been drawn at all.
The plan is to use Carey's joke for five, six, and eight, except with Autobiographosaurus; to wit, in five, he's sitting on the toilet drawing, in six, there are lots of dinosaurs sitting on lots of toilets drawing, and in eight, there are dinosaurs and ninjas sitting on toilets drawing.
It all needs to get done by the 28th of December, for that is the deadline.
Sorry, y'all, I sort of dropped the ball on this one. I have a good excuse. I can finish it by myself but I would really, truly appreciate an assist.

I'm new to this LJ community.
Made it to The Hideout once a while back, but couldn't make it after that due to distance, obligations, blah-blah-blah uninteresting stuff.
My name is Zach. I do the art for www.quackarena.com.
My life as an artist has definately picked up steam since last year so I wanted to reach back out and say Hi. Especially since the ASG site seemed to got kaput.
I met Chris from Staple at the Texas Book Fair panel on Comic Art and Texas and after talking about getting a table he mentioned that the sketch group had started meeting up north as well as at The Hideout. I was curious if this were correct because I'd like to meet if possible, and The Hideout is a bit of a drive for me.
Anyway, Just wanted to say "Hi there".
|Friday, November 23rd, 2007|
Here's a short little thread to discuss the things that Sketchgroup is working on right now -- add more below if I forgot any.
a) Zach's Comic Book Cover Jam -- when and where?
b) banner for Staple
c) The two-page story for the Staple brochure
d) Epoch said that we could do a show in March! Let me confirm that before we get all excited.
O yeah -- what about that web site?

99 Problems but a Dinosaur Ain't One
Drinking and Drawing was everything it was supposed to be. It was also tremendous fun.
About ten people showed up. Here's a terrible picture from my cell phone:
Good times. It started slow and quiet and everybody was spending all their time drawing and not making stupid jokes or falling over. But then we almost got in a fistfight with a drunk Eurotrash guy and it was really fun after that.
I think we worked on seven different stories (although Ismael did a flawless job of welding two of them together into one incoherent whole). I only took one home to scan with me, the longest and worst drawn and craziest of them all. I present to you:
DINOPROBLEMS, by Autobiographosaurus!( Read more...Collapse )
To sum up:

If you kicked in for the table, what do you want listed for your company, and what do you want listed as your publication?
If you didn't kick for the table, we might be able to find room for you in the brochure anyway. Let me know.

Buying the Staple tables today. Chris liked the idea, says he has the perfect place for us. I'll find out what he means by that and even get pictures.
www.staple-austin.org, if you're not familiar with the show.
After we pay for the tables it looks like we'll have a surplus, which I propose could be spent on materials for the banner. Zach wants to buy some art supplies and do them by hand.
We could also do a page or two for the Staple anthology. Some cool ideas for that.
A new web site is coming soon! At the moment we have four designers and no design, so somebody toss out an idea.
These and other things are best discussed while drunk, of course, so come to Drinking and Drawing on November 16th
, at Rio Rita's. Litsa and I checked the place out yesterday and it looks pretty darn good. Here's the map again:View Larger Map
It can be strangely hard to find so don't even bother looking for it. Just go east on 6th Street until you pass Attayac, park your car and go stand on the north sidewalk and there it is!
EDIT: Why can I not post the google map correctly? What sort of tag does LJ require?

New email list
We don't really have a good current email list of those still interested in ASG. We're going to start communicating and doing events again so it would be cool to communicate by email. If you want to get info/receive email about ASG events please email me at email@example.com and write "ASG" in the title.
We're also going to set up a more up-to-date web presence soon.

Jelly? It's this deal where you work.
My friend, Dusty, is hosting this deal called "Jelly" in Austin. It's basically a bunch of dudes who get together at a place and work on their own stuff for a full work day. He asked me to invite sketch group. Check it out!"I'm trying to get some momentum behind Jelly in Austin. Jelly is an
every-so-often casual co-working session. Anyone is welcome to come,
bring your laptop, art supplies, or whatever you need to work, and
work alongside other creative, fun people.
Our first event is Friday November 2nd at Genuine Joe's Coffeehouse and
goes from 10am to 5pm. There's no agenda. It's simply an opportunity
for unique people to get together and work alongside one another.
Hopefully exchanging ideas and making new connections.
To get involved check out Jelly in Austin.
And if you can make the Nov 2nd get-together PLEASE RSVP here."
It may be mostly web programmers or something, but I'm going! Just think of it as an extended ASG.
